The Snowball Effect
by Holly Nicole Hoxter
The Gist (from HarperCollins):
Lainey Pike can tell you everything you need to know about her family just by letting you know how they died. Her reckless stepfather drove his motorcycle off the highway and caused the biggest traffic jam in years. Her long-suffering grandmother lived through cancer and a heart attack before finally succumbing to a stroke. And Lainey’s mother hanged herself in the basement.
Now Lainey’s five-year-old brother is an orphan and her estranged older sister is moving back home to act as his guardian. As she tries to pull away from everything familiar, Lainey meets an intriguing new guy who, through a series of Slurpees, burgers, and snowballs, helps her to make peace with a parent she never understood.

My thoughts:
This book sounds really interesting! At first, I thought it seemed a little dark for my taste. However, the romantic aspect that's added makes it seems that there will be some lighter portions. Lainey seems like she'd be a really interesting character and definitely unique. She's having to grow up pretty fast. I'm interested to see Lainey's interaction with her brother, for whom this is obviously a tough situation for. This is Hoxter's debut novel, and I'm interested to see how she tackles this tough scenario.
